Getting Around Thailand: Tuk Tuks on Parade

by austin on

2008-3-23-thailand_tuktuk.jpg
Getting around many Asian cities can be a drastically different task when compared to European and American cities. Standardized mass transit isn't as ubiquitous, so other modes of locomotion have stepped in to fill the gap.

In Thailand, as well as in many other countries, small motorized carts called "tuk tuks" are one of the primary modes of transporting people around cities. They typically hold 2 or 3 people, although you'll often find them crammed with more. They're not the most luxurious ride, but a good driver can get you around faster than a larger taxi could.
A small word of warning, just as you would with taxi cabs, you have to be on the lookout for scam artists. On their most recent trip to Thailand, our friends got taken by a tuk tuk driver that roped them into a "tour" which mostly involved stopping at shops run by his friends.
However, keep in mind that not all drivers are scammers, so don't be scared to take advantage of the opportunity to take a ride if you've got it. So, the next time you're in Bangkok, keep your wits about you, hop aboard and enjoy the ride!

Here's a backseat view of a tuk tuk ride.
