Quick Tip: Forgotten Expenses
When you're setting aside a budget for an upcoming trip, it's easy to remember all the fun things that you'll need money to do, but what about those expenses incurred at home? If you can't beg, borrow, or steal to get something taken care of for you while you're away, paying for a specialized services can quickly add up. Here are a few ideas to keep in mind to keep unwelcome financial surprises at bay.
Spot and Fluffy
Having a free and reliable place to leave our pets is something we took for granted until recently. If you can pawn them off on reliable friends or family, then you're one of the lucky ones. For the rest of us there's pet sitters and boarding costs, that can quickly add up on a longer trip. Make sure you've done the math and set aside the cash accordingly. The last thing you want to think about when returning from a trip is where you're going to find that few extra hundred dollars to pay the petsitter.
Getting To The Airport
Sure, it's easy to bum a ride from a friend or take the bus. But, there are situations where you've got to find a home for your usual mode of transportation while you're abroad. If you live in the city and you're not fortunate enough to have a parking spot of your very own, an extended trip is a long time to leave your car parked on the street (or in our case illegal.) Finding a place to park your car may be as easy as begging a friend, but if you don't want to inconvenience them you're going to have to calculate parking costs into your trip's budget.
How To Save
All these added costs got you down? On the plus side, there are plenty of places to find money in your normal life's budget. Your typical food expenditures, lower utility costs, services than can be put on hold (Netflix, for example) and lack of need for transportation (i.e. uber-expensive gas) can help you find some funds to offset unforeseen costs without having to save a dime.
Do you have unusual circumstances that you have to consider when planning a trip? What other commonly forgotten costs do people overlook?
